Tea Website Administrator Skills

Notes regarding a successor

Background:

There are three parts to the TEA website admin task:

  • maintain the teaseattle.org domain
  • maintain the www.teaseattle.org website
  • work with the provider

Requirements:

To maintain the site and email functions without change,
the successful candidate will need to have knowledge of --

  • Bulk Emailing
  • Scripting/programming languages:

    • Python
    • Rebol
  • file formats:

    • HTML
    • DOC
    • RTF

  • Internet Protocols:

    • HTTP
    • FTP
    • SSH

To Change:

To revamp the website and email functions to suit the 21st
Century, the successful candidate will have to consider better
ways of constructing the site. For example ...

For the website:

Blog-like software for the website:

For the emails, either --
  • Bulk email or newsgroup providers
    • - or -
  • New Python, Perl or PHP/SQL scripts to replace the Rebol engine currently in use

Comments:

Editions of the TEA times
are sent as HTML for these reasons:

Many people do not bother to open emails with attachments; many people find plain text unprofessional, or too hideous to look at, or both; and email attachments are, quite simply, Evil.

Following this, there are two aspects to each TEA times publication:
  • convert a Microsoft Word document into (unstyled) HTML for the bulk email, the website home page, and the TEA times archives
  • send the email using non-County resources
Note: I consider it essential that emails do not display
the names of anyone other than the individual recipient

in the "To:" line of the header.
